PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAINING

Due to the deinstitutionalization of psychiatric patients, police departments increasingly have to deal with individuals with psychiatric problems. Research reflects that up to 20 % of calls to police departments in urban areas involve individuals with serious mental illness.  PPS will provide training in more effective ways of identifying and interacting with people with serious psychiatric problems and de-escalating confrontations.

Departments with community policing programs requiring police to work with the community to solve problems rather than just reacting to them. Departments find training in communication skills, active listening, problem solving  and knowledge of mental illness helpful in enhancing community relations and de-escalating confrontations.
