PENINSULA POLICE SERVICES PHILOSOPHY

The success of utilizing behavioral health specialists in police work is heavily dependent on the acceptance of officers of that clinical psychologist or psychiatrist. To achieve acceptance, the behavioral health specialist must obtain the trust of officers. Trust is achieved with regular predictable contact with officers and on the clarity of rules relating to confidentiality. It is essential for the officers to recognize that the behavioral health specialist has police experience and significant knowledge of their skills, demands and work environment.  The most advantageous way for this goal to be achieved is for the behavioral health specialist to train side-by-side with the police officers that he will be asked to assist.
